Stop Dams on River Mandakini And River Pinder

In Uttarakhand, hundreds of dams are coming up. In most of the cases, vast numbers of people are suffering from the destructive impacts of the construction. In particular, the plight of Mandakini and Pinder needs to be highlighted. These two rivers are the main tributaries of River Alaknanda, which meets the River Bhagirathi in Devprayag to form the Ganga.

In the case of Mandakini River, nearly 12 Hydro Electric Projects (HEPs) are coming up. On the main River Mandakini, massive demonstrations are being held in opposition to Singoli-Bhatwari HEP (99 MW) by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Phata-Byung HEP (76 MW by LANCO Infratech Ltd.). People have organized themselves for the fight under the banner of Kedar Ghati Sangharsh Samiti.

Agitation:- People stopping the dam's construction, facing false cases, fighting with the dam companies to protect their river, forest and villages. Under the protection of local administration and police, dam builders are trying to continue the dam work.

Issues:- Environmental public hearing held without notice and in violation of procedures, false promises, misinformation about the real impact of the dam, and how it will be hazardous for the middle Himalayan environment, ecology, as well as people's rights.
