An Update and appeal for Tehri..

There was a big Diwali event in Old Tehri town. People celebrate Diwali in traditional way and before Diwali youths of the town organise 10 days Dushahera festival. This happened after 18 years.
The Old Tehri town
Tehri was a very glorious Town and now it is an abundant town and 31st of NOV. was the last date to evict the town. Broken sewage system, hospital without medicine, no proper water supply etc. because it is under the threat of submergence in the controversial Tehri Dam(n). Citizen’s life becomes totally miserable. Without proper rehabilitation of the entire citizen’s of the town Govt. threaten them since 1996.
Power minister’s visit
Recently in the first week of November, central power minister Mr. Suresh Parbhu visited the Tehri and assured people—I will talk with central and state govt. on rehabilitation issue. Then district administration postponed the date of closing the gate of tunnel No, 3 and 4.
- On 4th Nov. a group of landowner of old Tehri met central power minister Mr. Suresh Pabhu and newly appoint C.M. Uttranchal Mr. Bhagat Singh Koshiyari in Dehradun and discuss their problems.
- On 5th Nov. power minister Mr. Suresh Pabhu visited old Tehri town. He surprised to know, in the middle of rehabilitation people threatened to leave their habitation. He was upset with the way Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd. Works. He enquired about the details (village and head wise) expenditure on rehabilitation. He raised the question of transparency in the rehabilitation work. He assured people that he would sit with power & finance ministry and with planning commission to resolve the problems of displacement. Also he will give a hearing to the people. He postponed the closures of the gates of tunnel No. 3 and 4 until he talked to the Prime Minister.
- On behalf of Tehri Bandh Bhoomidhar Sangathan we filed a petition on 6th of November in National Human Rights Commission requesting the
Hon’ble commission to immediately intervene in the matter to protect the human rights of the people living in the area. This Hon’ble Commission may issue directions to the Authorities to continue providing the amenities necessary for a humane and peaceful living of the people till their rehabilitation is fully satisfied.
NHRC sent a notice to state Govt. to answer.
New threat---
On 20th November 2001 there was a notice in Amer Ujala, one Hindi Daily--------
THIS TO INFOFM THE LOCALS THAT DUE TO CONSTRUCTION OF TEHRI DAM THE TUNNEL NO.3&4 WILL BE CLOSED IN LAST WEEK OF NOVEMBER AND DUE TO THE CLOSURE THE OLD CITY AREA OF TEHRI TOWN WILL SUBMERGE IN 640 M DEEP WATER. AND IT WILL CREAT A DANGER FOR THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THAT AREA. SO PEOPLE ARE REQUESTED TO EVACUATE THE AREA AND SHIFT TO THE NEW ALLOTED AREA.
This is totally violation of power minister’s assurance to the people. You are requested to send letter, fax email or telegram to Power minister that he should intervene and stop Uttranchal Govt. to violate the human rights of Tehri town people.
